nextScan Supplies Powerful Solutions for National Digital Newspaper
Program Participants

nextScan has announced its support of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). The NDNP will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers over the next 20 years from all the states and U.S. territories, published between 1836 and 1922. The resulting searchable database will be permanently maintained at the Library of Congress and be freely accessible to the public via the Internet.

By supplying film scanning hardware and a powerful and innovative new software called NextStar to state and local government agencies that plan to participate in the NDNP’s cooperative national effort, nextScan can help facilitate the digital conversion of historical microfilmed newspaper images in several formats, and deliver the superior image quality required by the NDNP specifications to enable accurate OCR of the digital files.

NEW GOVERNMENT STIMULUS PACKAGE

Want to know the true cost of ownership of your nextScan equipment if purchased in 2008?

A new economic stimulus package has been put into place that will allow companies to get a bonus deduction in a single tax year on equipment purchased in 2008, rather than a little at a time over a number of years.  This deduction, Section 179, specifies that businesses that spend less than $ 800,000 a year on qualified equipment, can write off up to $ 250,000 in 2008.  Unless Congress extends this after 2008, the Tax Code 179 depreciation will go back to $ 125,000 after year end.

Tax Savings Example – Section 179 Deduction

Cost of Equipment:

$ 300,000

Section 179 Deduction:

$ 250,000

50% Bonus Depreciation:

$ 25,000

Regular 1st Year Depreciation Deduction:

$ 5000

Total 1st Year Deduction:

$ 280,000

Cash Savings on Your Equipment Purchase:
(assuming a 35% tax bracket)

$ 98,000

Lowered Cost of Equipment After Tax Savings:

$ 202,000
